Polity — M. Laxmikanth (Non-Negotiable)

Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth is the single most important book for UPSC GS Paper 2. It covers the Indian Constitution, Parliament, Judiciary, State Governments, and constitutional bodies in comprehensive detail. Every serious UPSC aspirant reads this book — often twice. It is explicitly recommended in every coaching institute's study plan and appears directly in question framing almost every year.

Currently in its 7th edition, the Laxmikanth is available on Amazon India in hardcover (₹649–₹799) and paperback (₹599–₹699). Always buy the latest edition — constitutional amendments and landmark judgments are updated with each edition.

Modern Indian History — Spectrum and Bipan Chandra

A Brief History of Modern India by Spectrum (Rajiv Ahir) is the standard reference for modern history in UPSC GS Paper 1. It covers the colonial period, the independence movement, and the socio-economic history of India from 1707 to 1947. Concise, well-organised, and directly aligned with the UPSC syllabus — most coaching institutes recommend it alongside Bipin Chandra's longer work.

India's Struggle for Independence by Bipan Chandra is the more comprehensive and academically rigorous account of the freedom movement. It covers perspectives the Spectrum book doesn't — the revolutionary movement, communism's role, the role of women. UPSC aspirants reading for depth (rather than just exam coverage) benefit from both.
